So far, 14 games beaten in the year 2010

Technically, this is the sort of post I should have done around the end of June, but I’m a bit slow with these things, and so here it is nonetheless. We’re now definitely halfway through the year 2010, and I thought it’d be neat to stroll back through time and count up the number of games I’ve beaten at this point.

Beaten.

Sometimes, in the world of videogames, that concept is hard to pinpoint. I mean, at what point does someone beat an MMORPG like World of Warcraft? Is it when they reach a level cap or actually run out of in-game missions? How would one define beating UNO, a multiplayer-heavy arcade game that has no main quests to complete? So, for a lot of these games, I think I have to just use my better judgment and decide if completing enough of a game equals beating it. One easy clue is that, most often, a game on the Xbox 360 will have an Achievement tied to beating it, and so if that’s unlocked I will definitely check it off (there’s one exception to this, which you can read about below).

Not surprisingly, all games beaten in the year 2010 for me were either on the Xbox 360 or the Nintendo DS…

Xbox 360

  • LEGO Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues
  • Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter (something wonky happened and the “you beat the game!” Achievement never popped, grrr)
  • BioShock
  • SEGA Superstars Tennis (I basically played every single thing on this so it’s considered beaten)
  • Dragon Age: Origins
  • The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom
  • The Saboteur
  • Peggle (um, I completed the main campaign, just not all the side challenges yet)
  • Street Fighter II’ HF
  • Borderlands
  • Limbo

Nintendo DS

  • Hidden Mysteries Titanic: Secrets of the Fateful Voyage
  • Pokemon HeartGold (I beat the first region and the Fab Four or whatever they were called, and have now unlocked the second region, as well as a lot of post-game material)
  • TouchMaster 3

14 if my math is correct. That’s okay, but for some reason, I expected more in the Nintendo DS category. Maybe I’m just going crazy. Or forgetting a bunch. Oh wells.

There’s a couple of games I’m really close to beating, but still need more time with. Namely, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Picross 3D (I’d like to get over the 200 puzzles mark for this one), LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (this is going slower than many might have expected from me, but that’s because I’m playing the whole thing co-op with Tara), and ‘Splosion Man.

Gamers often fall into the trap of buying more games before completing the ones they’re already working on, and yes, I’ve hit that hump too. However, with money and time becoming a bigger issue right now, I’d really love to work on clearing out more of the backlog. There’s pretty much only two games on my must-buy list (Scott Pilgrim VS. The World: The Videogame and Fallout: New Vegas), and so I will climb this backlog mountain, hand over foot, until sweet victory washes over me like a morning breeze, and then–and only then–will I strike my victory pose.

  1. Congrats on beating all of these games. I have only beaten one game in my life…that was Donkey Kong on the old game boy…but I really did have a great sense of accomplishment.

  2. And to think I was happy to beat Plants vs. Zombies on my iPod!

  3. That sounds amazing to me. I think I once won a few games playing pong 😛 Congratulations!

  4. That is an impressive list – the only games I ever beat was Project IGI and then way back in the day I slaughtered Q-bert. I wish I had more time in a day because these newer games are phenominal.

  5. That your first time playing through Bioshock? If so, congrats! One of the best shooters I’ve ever played, one of the best games in general I’ve played in ages. Really wanna give Limbo and P.B. Winterbottom a shot myself after loving the hell out of Braid last year.

    • It was, yes! I almost didn’t finish the game, but a friend encouraged me to do so. Really glad I got to experience it.

Of the two, I say go with Limbo first. It’s a better experience overall.

  6. Oh, and great post, man! Props on making the front page, haven’t seen one about video games featured in forever.

  7. You’re dedication to video game supremacy is inspiring. I hope to join your ranks one day fine sire. Good work on the self-deprecating writing voice you have developed. It’s comic-con level cool.

  8. Someone hasn’t been spending a lot of time outdoors this summer. 🙂

  9. It’s pretty awesome to see this kind of post on the front page of WordPress. I’m up to 32 games this year, but it’s easier when you’re unemployed. Mostly Wii retail and downloadable games. I wish I had a 360 for games like Limbo and Bioshock.

  10. You know what games I’ve beaten in the year 2010? Bridge, Chinese Checkers, Gin Rummy, The Crossword Puzzle, Charades, Square Dancing, Travel, and Spending Time with my Family.

  11. Sweet post man, and congrats on Freshly Pressed!
I’ve recently beaten Spirit Tracks, I had a lot of fun with that game, especially getting all the little side missions done.
How was Saboteur? I’ll be starting that game soon.

  12. Congrats! This post made me think about all of the games I have beaten – not many. I plan on playing more during the later half of the year. Great Post and site.

  13. Family Man (10G) ?

  14. Good point. I cleared out my collection of 360 games recently to fund some charity work I’m doing and I suddenly realised there were 10-15 games which I’d never completed. Too much time spent playing Fifa I guess…

  15. We have a few games around here that neither of us have beaten yet. There are also a lot of games only one of us have beaten. We love the few local co-op games we’ve found because we both enjoy playing games.

I’ve beaten (I think) three games this year. Infinite Undiscovery, Tales of Vesperia, and Civilization Revolution (by beating CivRev I mean I got all the achievements.) I haven’t been spending as much time gaming lately.

  16. Hey gratz on the gamerscore 15k is amazing im only on 8k lol but 1000g on call of duty 4 which im quite proud of lol have you 1000 gamerscored any games? and a very nice list very informative, thanks

  17. Let’s see: Dragon’s AGe: Origins, Mass Effect 2, Splinter Cell and… Professor Layton. Not a huge list… but not bad for a working mother…

(And gratz on making the front page!)

  18. Keep working on it! I finished Assassin’s Creed, Bioshock, Fable II, GTA IV, and Marvel Alliance before my 360 was stolen. I was working on Far Cry 2 at the time…

  19. Nice ive completed some games in my life time but only ones worth completing, like for instance the whole Metal Gear Solid series man i love that game.

  20. i beat my cock xD

  21. Congratulations!

  22. Congratulations on your achievement…lol… :o)

  23. This reminds me of all the games I still need to beat. I won’t even delve into that list. Does everyone finish games nowadays? Is that what the kids are doing? I have no idea. I’m like that lone kid at the lunch table.

  24. no coment

  25. Congrats! I think the last game I fully beat is Modern Warfare. I got super close on MW2, but always spent my time playing online instead of in campaign.

I think I felt most accomplished when I got all 1000 gamer points for Madden 2009 for the 360.

  26. Congratulations!

I’ve been working on Borderlands, but I’m playing with my brother so we’re not there yet…

I also have Lego Harry Potter on my list, I didn’t finsh the books, but they make great games.

  27. I’ve got a pretty large backlog of games, which is probably going to stay that way until I finish Starcraft II. The last game I beat was “Turrican II” on the Amiga (actually a few days ago) . But I still need to get through Far Cry, amongst other things…

  28. Spent waaaay to much time playing Borderlands and Modern Warfare 2 this year. Close with Batman but finally gave up, and nearly done with Assassin’s Creed 2. I know there is more but I can’t remember.

  29. Good job! I finally got around to getting Bioshock for PC this year and it was fantastic (except for the very end.). Beating it gave me the inspiration and head of steam to finish my M.A.

  30. Just think that I almost never finish a game before buying another one! Sigh sigh ;(

  31. cool! well done! I got back into Guild Wars for the PC two days ago and I’m really enjoying it again!

  32. yeah, I never finish my stuff … I think the only two games I actually finished this year was Fable 2 for 360 and DA:O for the computer.
though you know it’s a good game when other stuff comes out and you want to finish it first.

  33. very nice! I have spirit tracks over you it seems >:D

  34. Respect to the craftsmanship! 😀

Havent got either consols but i must have beaten at least 5 games this year on the PS3.

  35. This thread sounds like an 8 year old writing about their achievements.

  36. That’s so awesome! Why didn’t I have this idea already? Oh, maybe because I suck at games and hardly ever beat them.. But… when I think about it, I did beat some games already. I might incorporate that into my Life list or so.

Good luck and keep up the good job! I’ll come back and watch your progress :).

  37. I used to be good at games and beat the crap out of in days or hours nut now I get like 20 mins of play time and i redo levels and missions over and over to get the achievements see

  38. Nice post. I don’t think I’ve beaten any games this year yet. 😦 I’m close with War For Cybertron and GTA IV. There was time when I would beat at least a game a month… oh I miss those days.

  39. you wont be disappointed with Bioshock. the second one is already out however. but if you are looking for a TRUE horror game, get dead space! and play in the dark!

  40. Well I hope you enjoyed Dragon age: Origins, I played and beat it as well as awakenings good games, and you are right not many people beat games with so many new ones coming out that they want, so far I consider having only half beat heartgold since I’ve only beat the elite four the first time. Also if you do go out after playing that many games, be careful of the sun.

  41. Wow…14 games completed! Congrats. I’ve set a resolution this year to beat the games in my video games library (mainly on the PS3), your story is a boost!

  42. I beat the free version of stone wars on my iPhone. And quit playing WoW, so I consider that beating the game!

  43. Congrats!!! I’v just completed 4 … still need to work on next 10 games :DD

  44. Congrats on the success,

i’ve recently spent a lot of time working on my achievements on 360.

a game you should try is definitely Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion, takes a while but it is such an awesome game to complete.

I’ve just started to play dragon age origins again because the last time i completed it i didnt have live so all its points went onto my ordinary login (similar story to my cod 6 and assasins creed 2 points)

I too fell into the trap of buying game after game and not even playing them in the case of halo 3 and odst, assasin’s creed 1 and awakenings or playing for 2 days and returning to work and thus not having time to play anymore in the case of bad company 2 and prototype.

congrats again on the game count and good luck for then next lot of games.

  45. I was thinking of buying Dragon Age:Origins for my PC.I wanted to ask you that is it a game worth that???what makes is cool?

  46. in sub note having noticed you have played oblivion, how awesome is it?
i’ve got 50/50 because i didnt get the shivering isle expansion but it is so much fun.

my list for this year is 7 xbox 360

    cod 6(campaign only)
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (campaign only0
    Fable 2
    Oblivion
    Dragon Age: Origins
    Jason and the Argonauts
    Asassin’s Creed 2

and pokemon heart gold on ds

and heroes of might and magic 3 on computer

oh the possibilities if i didnt work 30hrs a week and do uni!

    • I kind of gave up on Oblivion after getting through the main storyline quest. I know there’s plenty more to do, it’s just I kind of lost the passion to care. Plus the game kept freezing on me at times, leading to a lot of frustration.

Yeah, if only work didn’t get in the way. 😛

      • i left the main story line til last, i have been a huge fan on the pc for ages but cos i upgraded to a mac i couldnt play it without huge lag and freezing so i bought it for 360 so first time without major cheats and mods and first time actually completing it.

    • I gave up on oblivion because I only play games on the hardest difficulty. and that game is IMPOSSIBLE on the hardest. you need a lot of patience sheesh. but bad company 2 is amazing! i havent stopped playing it since april! you should try the multiplayer. battlefield games highlights are in its multiplayer not singleplayer. but becareful with multiplayer games. itll make you slack off 😥

  47. i’ve recently spent a lot of time working on my achievements on 360.

  48. hows spirit tracks going?

    • Still no new progress. I’m on what I believe to be is the final dungeon; I just need to sit down with a good hour to play and charge through it. Then I’ll be done. No bunny/stamp collecting for me…

  49. Broken Lamp Post

Congratulations! And good job! I would never be able to any of those 14 games. I think Fifa is as far as I go 😛 Haha. Maybe I need to take a break from it and try something different. But anyways, good job!

    http://brokenlamppost.wordpress.com/

  50. Thanks, Raul! I wish I had more time in a day because these newer games are phenominal.

  51. I loved this article? (or is it more just a graphic?)Anyway, thanks so much for the cool link! It’s been favorited for future design inspiration. 😉
